Three Magazines, One Fashion Plate

Untitled

Years ago, this would be 2001 or 2002, I had a very good mail day in which I received a copy of a fashion plate from La Belle Assemblee and a bound edition of The Lady's Monthly Museum from 1829. Much to my surprise, one of the dresses in one of the fashion plates was identical. I wrote about them on my webpage.

So imagine my surprise when a third copy came up on Pinterest! This one is from 1828, and was published as Costumes allemand et francois.

This dress was also redrawn in Costume in Detail

Here's a link to the pins--I couldn't post them next to each other, so a screenshot and Flickr it was!

Quite exciting, no?

  1. There were no copyright laws, so the same dresses could be seen with little or no alterations in pretty much every fashion magazine there was...

  2. Hi, I'm sorry, this is not the proper place but I can't find contact info anywhere so I'll ask here. I want to make Eowyn's Shieldmaiden dress but I'm not sure which pattern you said you used for the vest. Is it this: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=3027#.UQMMvPKwe0K ?
    Thanks,
    Eleni

  3. Thanks, it is out of print now, I'll have to find it on amazon or ebay. Also it's a pattern meant to be sewn of fabric with stretch. Did you adjust it at all?

  4. Hello! I am an avid frequenter of your blog and website and after perusing your janet arnold bib front gown remake I had only one very important question that has prevented me from ever having success with this gown....what do you do about sewing the front and back skirts together?! They overlap so much at the top, what do you do about the hem? I am sorry to leave this comment in a completely unrelated topic but I couldn't find an email or any way to contact you! If you dont mind divulging the information, please feel free to e-mail me at teh.auky[at]gmail[dot]com.

thank you so much and keep up the good work! you inspire us all!
